Feeding into our VFX workshops,this in-depth round table discussion will host representatives from various sides of the budgetary spectrum who will discuss the techniques and tricks and how all have a part to play in today’s filmic landscape.
We will discuss the impact of accessible VFX techniques on the filmmaking landscape, taking in Indie productions like Monsters, Trollhunter, Attack the Block and of course, Grabbers and Lockout. Can the draw of VFX in an indie movie make up for the lack of major name stars and other budgetry trappings? Are VFX techniques a way for Indie features to get noticed and find audiences?
But then poorly executed VFX can damn a production too - audiences will make unforgiving comparisons to the multi-million dollar work of studio films. What are the corners that cannot be cut - and what routes have filmakers taken to get the best value up on screen? We will discuss new techniques with the panel that have enabled them to achieve high quality results with low investment.
We will look at techniques that are used invisibly to optimise the budget of a project, for example digital set extensions, matte painting and green screen backlot shooting. American TV productions are becoming very adept at shooting in LA or Canada and repurposing the locations as New York or Moscow. Are these techniques suitable for low budget Indie features?
This discussion guests include, from the VFX team of Grabbers, Paddy Eason - Nvizible , Lockout, Ciaran Crowley - Windmill Lane, plus VFX DIY expert Alan Lambert, Director The End OF the Earth Is My Home.
The discussion will be moderated by Gavin Kelly the creative director from Piranha Bar.
