Darklight are delighted to welcome celebrated Oscar® nominated cinematographer Seamus McGarvey to the festival as our special guest. Seamus will take part in an in-depth discussion about his work on titles such as We Need To Talk About Kevin, Atonement and the soon to be released and eagerly anticipated adaptation of Anna Karenina.
This will be a rare opportunity to hear Seamus talk about his creative process as a cinematographer and his invaluable insight into the whole filmmaking experience. Not to be missed.
BIO SEAMUS MCGARVEY BSC
born 29 June 1967 in Armagh, Northern Ireland, Seamus began his career as a still photographer before attending film school at the University of Westminster in London.
Upon graduating in 1988 he began shooting short films and documentariec, including Skin, which was nominated for a Royal Television Society Cinematography Award, and Atlantic, directed by Sam Taylor-Wood, nominated for the 1998 Turner Prize. He also photographed and directed over 100 music videos, for such artists as U2, The Rolling Stones, PJ Harvey, Robbie Williams, Sir Paul McCartney, Dusty Springfield and Coldplay. In 1998, the British Society of Cinematographers invited McGarvey to join. In 2004 he was awarded the Royal Photographic Society's prestigious Lumiere medal for contributions to the art of cinematography. His credits as a cinematographer include Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center, starring Nicolas Cage, The Hours, directed by Stephen Daldry, starring Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore, for which he earned the Evening Standard British Film Award for Best Technical/Artistic Achievement; the action-adventure film Sahara, starring Matthew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz, for which he won the Irish Film and Television Award for Best Cinematography; Along Came Polly, starring Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston; High Fidelity, directed by Stephen Frears, starring John Cusack; Wit, starring Emma Thompson, directed by Mike Nichols; Enigma, directed by Michael Apted; The War Zone; Butterfly Kiss; The Winter Guest; The Actors; A Map of the World; Charlotte's Web; Atonement, for which he has received an Academy Award nomination (2008),a BAFTA nomination (2008) and the Technical Achievement award in the Evening Standard British Film Awards for 2007 and won the 2008 Irish Film and Television Award for Best Cinematography; A 2007 television advert for Chanel's Coco Mademoiselle campaign; and The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency directed by Anthony Minghella. In 2008 he shot The Soloist for director Joe Wright in Los Angeles. He shot "Nowhere Boy" for director Sam Taylor-Wood and reunited with director Joe Wright for the short film Cut. He shot the acclaimed Lynne Ramsay's We Need to Talk About Kevin, starring Tilda Swinton, in New York and Connecticut. He shot The Avengers for director Joss Whedon which is the third biggest grossing movie of all time. He recently shot Anna Karenina for Joe Wright.
BIO KIERON J WALSH
Kieron J. Walsh was studying Fine Art Sculpture until Dun Laoghaire Art School started a Film and TV course. His graduation film Goodbye Piccadilly on three Fuji Film scholarship awards in 1988.
He subsequently received a British Council scholarship to study film direction at the Royal College of Art in London where he won numerous international prizes for his graduation film Bossanova Blues including a gold plaque from the Chicago Film Festival and the Premier Prix De La Mise-en-Scene at the Henri Langois Festival, Poitiers, France. His follow-up film Shooting to Stardom won Best Short at the Cork Film Festival.
Since then Kieron has directed films for the BBC, Working Title, Channel 4, Granada and RTE including the hit series The Young Persons Guide To Becoming A Rockstar (RTS award for Best Series), his first feature When Brendan Met Trudy written by Roddy Doyle which was released worldwide, Watermelon for Granada based on the novel by Marian Keyes, Kitchen for Ecosse films with Eddie Izzard and the first series of RAW for RTE. He also directed a film for the acclaimed Becketton Film series.
In 2005 he set up BL!NDER, a commercials company with Richie Smyth and Michael Duffy and in early 2006 he founded BL!NDER FILMS to develop and produce drama and documentary for a domestic and international audience. Kieron recently devised and directed The Savage Eye Series One and Two, a comedy sketch show for RTE starring David McSavage and Pat McDonnell. Katie Holly and Kieron produced Sensation together which after a successful festival and theatre run will be released on DVD in Spring 2012. He has also just finished post production on the feature film Jump (Hotshot/Bl!nder Films Production) which is due for release for 2012
