Oculus Rift Bedamned! - Make your own VR headset
Over the past several years, mobile technology, such as small screens and tiny accelerometers have advanced at a pace that has enabled a new generation of Virtual Reality. The objectives of this workshop and discussion group is to learn how to assemble your own VR headset and probe and discuss the future of this new generation of virtual reality.
Join Eoghan Kidney to learn how to assemble your own VR headset using googles, binoculars and your smartphone.
**NB** To create a working VR headset you will require use of your own smartphone with a screen at least 4 inches when horizontal. You must bring one of the following phone models (fully charged) to the workshop. We won't be asking you to damage the phone in any way, apart from sticking it to some cardboard with tape.

Workshop Format:
This workshop will begin with a general overview and introduction to virtual reality 2.0. This is followed by participants viewing tutorial videos. Facilitator, Eoghan Kidney, will then bring the class through step-by-step instructions to carefully assemble a VR headset.
The end-result is a screen attached to the plastic glasses that is connected to a tracker that measures head movement. Wearing the rift is similar to having spherical screens around your head. This is what you create and there's one for everyone in the audience!
This workshop will take place in a classroom-style format in BlockT, Smithfield. All materials will be supplied (apart from personal smartphones) including the googles, binoculars, cut-out templates and we'll definitely find some use for double-sided stickytape...
Facilitator's Biography:
Eoghan Kidney:
Eoghan is a director, animator and filmmaker . He studied in IADT, and is one of the founding members of the well known Irish animation collective, Delicious 9. During the four years working with this group he collaborated over 50 different projects, ranging from video installations, design, live audio-visual performances, visual sets, curation, children's workshops and 25 experimental music videos. Eoghan is currently developing feature films as writer/director. He has recently created short live action pieces, held animation workshops in Palestine and toured his live animation visual performance with the band Somadrone. He has also been producing short internet based experimental pieces, performed various solo live audio visual mixes and directed several new music videos.
