Curated by Colin McKeown from Cinema Northwest, Western Lights is a selection of works made by local filmmakers or about the local area.

Works include: The Polish Language (Orla McHardy), Falling Awake (Linda Shevlin and Padraig Cunningham) and Made in Sligo (Peter Martin).

In My Own Time

Grace Weir

In my own time, consists of a series of episodes drawing together perceptions of time from different philosophical and cultural viewpoints. Episodes revealing how ancient societies regarded time and space in relation to direct experience – encapsulated in the phrase ‘as long as it takes to milk a cow’ – are shown alongside treatments of Einstein’s theories, ideas about civil timekeeping and the possibility of time travel. Influenced by 19th-century scientific demonstrations, the artist explores these ideas through her own actions and activities. However Weir’s work is as much involved with the qualities and structures of film-making as it is with science. The film explores the connection between the concept of one’s self as a being in time and the sense of one’s life as a narrative. Events in the film are portrayed in a rational style; but oscillate between fact and fiction, between documentary and cinematic illusion.

Mount Analogue Revisited

Walker and Walker

Walker and Walker’s film Mount Analogue Revisited, is a reworking of Rene Daumal’s book ‘Mount Analogue’ which was Daumal’s final work and remained uncompleted due to the author’s premature death. The book is an unfinished story of a voyage to an unknown island, where the voyagers seek an improbable mountain which is seen as a means to link Heaven and Earth.

We Are Poets

We Are Poets presents a timely and surprising story that confronts our understanding of youth, as six remarkable teenage poets from Leeds Young Authors take up the challenge of representing the UK at Brave New Voices – the most prestigious poetry slam competition in the world. From their inner city lives to a stage in front of the White House in Washington DC, the poets must prepare for a transformational journey of a lifetime.
