Darklight returned to Dublin's Temple Bar from Thursday 25 - Sunday 28 of May 2000, for our second year. MANY THANKS to all who attended the event once again this year.

Expanding on the success of the first festival in 1999. Darklight once again hosted a select mix of screenings, seminars, art exhibition, and live events which explored and celebrated the creative potential of art, film and music in digital technology.

For those who did not get to attend. Here is a run through of the events and what happened. ENJOY.

The festival kicked off on Thursday the 25 of May, with the Irish premiere of Harmony Korine's 'julien donkey boy' and followed for a further 3 days, featuring a diverse programme of international and homegrown works. From selected award winning international films to fresh new student work, programmes dedicated to innovative and experimental application of new technology, a showcase programme of games intros, 3D effects and commercial work,groundbreaking music videos and a DV look at documentaries.

Soul Survivor
Soul Survivor, a dance creation by Ireland's foremost contemporary Dance Company, Dance Theatre of Ireland, featuring digital projections of 3D animation, digitally treated footage, and web gathered imagery. This film of Soul Survivor documented the performance for a cinema setting with Video Design by Tim Redfern of Digital Media Centre, D.I.T.

Graphic Japan
The compilation programme Graphic Japan comprised of work by twenty five young graphic designers from the so called Tokyo-2000 generation. There were works from the artistic side and also commercial work-with well known names such as Nendo Graphic Squad and Tanaka Noriyuki. The popular music act Fantastic Plastic Machine (Tanaka Tomoyuki) is represented with Dear Mr. Salesman, a mix of Graphic and live action animation.

Salon
"The Watchful Eye", curated by Mimi Brody and Paul Rowley, including work from Ireland, USA, UK, Lebanon and Australia. The Watchful Eye presented a collection of short tapes focusing on themes of surveillance and voyeurism. Plus
"No Motive " by Desperate Optimists.

Alongside the screenings.....

Darklight presented Straylight - off the beaten planet an exhibition of digital Art

Showing a combination of gallery based and public work covering digital sound and video installations, interactive CD, DVD, web-based artworks, projections, digital imaging, gaming and VR.

Seminars included.....

"Walking with Dinosaurs" Our opening seminar featured the making of the award winning "Walking with Dinosaurs" series for BBC. Hailed as the most expensive documentary ever made we were pleased to welcome Framestore's Mike Milne to discuss their exceptional work.

Media Convergence and Distribution A panel of invited guests discussed Webcasting! Netcasting! Cybercasting! Microcasting! Narrowcasting! Streaming media! Broadband access! while also considering the state of the online broadcasting industry.

Sony DW-F900 24p "a new era in movie making". This seminar took a closer look at the revolutionary new high def Sony camera.Showing a selection of work shot using this new camera including Wim Wenders latest production 'The Ground Beneath Her Feet' featuring a song by U2 from the movie 'The Million Dollar Hotel'.

Darklight in association with Influx presented Future Shadows

The festival culminated in an open air event, this year encompassing three venues, featuring live acts, djs, multimedia performers and visual artists.

IFC
The Whispering Gallery sound installation, experimental electronic and improvised music. Featuring Thinker Org and Zoger. DJ Mek DJ Wool 'redsettaz and click[live]'

Meeting House Square
Meeting House Square transformed into an installation space with music and visuals streamed live from the Music Center. Projected images from the festival screenings and Light Surgeons.
